Despite the anti-gay reputation of the socially and politically dominant Mormon Church, Salt Lake City is still very much an international city. With so many world-class resorts in close proximity, the denizens of the Great Salt Lake basin have become tolerant of, if not exactly enthusiastic for, the diverse cultures that converge here. Lesbigay visitors to Salt Lake may be surprised to find that Utah does have a pride parade each June and a LGBT community center. While there are only a handful of strictly gay bars in Salt Lake (generally located in less-than-savory stretches of downtown), most of the larger nightclubs are gay-friendly and often host weekly gay nights. Radio City

You've never been to a gay dive bar until you've been to Radio City. Even some gay Salt Lake locals claim never to have been. But that's the exciting part. And it's not scary, just... different. Radio City resembles a defunct soda parlor that now serves $1.50 drafts rather than malteds. Also, beer is served by the quart (there is no wine or liquor). It doesn't so much attract a rough crowd as a broke one that ends up serving as the in-house entertainment. And thanks to youthful bartenders, who are more punk than pink, the jukebox doesn't suck either.

A gay-friendly bar and grill that summons the gods of Mardi Gras for outrageous nightly excitement. Live music and colorful trappings attract a young, friendly crowd who drink like they're in New Orleans even in the middle of a non-alcoholic Mormon desert. The Big Easy makes a facile transition to this strong foothold, serving up greasy burgers and wild fries alongside RumRunners and Hurricanes. |
The Trapp and The Trapp Door

Set in the darkness on the edge of town, the Trapp and the Trapp Door are two related venues located on one of Salt Lake's seedier blocks. The Trapp caters to an older crowd fond of happy hours with strong drinks in large mason jars. The Trapp Door attracts a younger clientele that prefers dancing to drinking (though neither is mutually exclusive) and arrives later in the evening. Both are private clubs, which means in order to get in you need a sponsor (the doorman can usually provide a willing patron) and a small cover. |

Not quite a bar, not exactly a sex club, but it's hard to tell where one stops and the other begins. With underwear, leather and jock strap nights (not to mention an enforced dressed code), it's best to call ahead for details. |
Club Try-Angles

Once you get over the name (a super-clever pun), you'll find a nice addition to the Salt Lake City gay club scene. A full bar, a pool table and a spacious dance floor lend modern flair to what would otherwise amount to a neighborhood bar. Happy hours and select nights feature buck drafts and local color. Later in the evening the bar fills with the corn-fed, blonde ex-Mormons who pass for prime-rib in this temple of sin. |
