It's hard to beat the combination of great drinks and live music, and Salt Lake City has a wide variety of live music clubs that combine the two perfectly. Monk's House of Jazz features live music and cold drinks, but don't be fooled by the name. This Salt Lake City venue features punk, rock, reggae and hip-hop along with some live jazz. O'Shucks, also in Salt Lake City, mixes the best of an Irish pub, sushi bar and music club. Sound a bit weird? Maybe it should, but where else can you get sushi, Guinness and punk rock all in one place? Blues fans should make way to Mo's Neighborhood Grill, a friendly little place that often hosts some of the best blues bands in Salt Lake City.
Green Street Social Club
610 Trolley Sq., Salt Lake City, UT; Tel. 801.532.4200
This spacious club is divided into four separate areas, making it one of the roomiest bars in Salt Lake City. Shoot some pool in the billiards hall, or relax on a warm night outside on Green Street Social Club's patio. Head upstairs to listen to some live music and check out the den for a fine cigar and brandy. The dress code is strictly enforced, so a classy feel permeates amongst the clientele. The place gets packed Thursday through Saturday, so it's a good idea to come early if you expect to sit down and enjoy the fine dining on hand. A bit trendy, but always bustling, the Green Street is for those who want a social scene that excludes the dive bar-fly types. |
The Hog Wallow Pub
3200 E. Big Cottonwood Canyon Road, Salt Lake City, UT; Tel. 801.733.5567
Veer off the beaten path and head to the Hog Wallow Pub, a bustling Salt Lake City tavern that was once a full-fledged biker bar. The Harleys may be gone, but the vivacious atmosphere and live music scene still persist, making the Hog an ideal choice for an action packed night out. Pool tables, dartboards, and a pinball machine complete the total bar package that this Salt Lake bar offers. And the food isn't half bad either—tasty pizzas and appetizers compliment the array of local and national brews on tap. |
Liquid Joe's
1249 E. 3300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah; Tel. 801.467.5637
A popular destination with the younger crowd, this Salt Lake City bar features live rock music at least four nights a week and great drink specials. Shoot pool and listen to 80's hair-metal with locals looking to unwind and get a little crazy. Too shy to mingle? Liquid Joe's also has a stellar video game arcade—don't forget to bring plenty of quarters. Touring bands are booked a few times a month, so check the listings to find one that suits your rock ‘n roll taste. |
Mo's Neighborhood Grill
358 S West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT; Tel. 801.359.0736
Like one of those cool pens that lets you choose between ink colors, Mo's Neighborhood Grill is a neighborhood bar that provides guest with several different options. In the front half, you've got a family-style café-bistro with a salad bar and occasionally, live jazz. Towards the rear, the restaurant becomes more of a traditional bar, which means there are several beers on tap, a pool table, and a small stage for live blues and rock bands (not jazz). An extensive menu that covers all food possibilities, live music, and of course, cold beer, make Mo's a convenient stop for practically anyone. |
Monk's House of Jazz
19 E 200 S Salt Lake City, UT; Tel.801.350.0950
Right off, it's necessary to point out the slightly misleading nature of the name of this Salt Lake City bar and music venue. Though Monk's sign reads “Jazz Club,” don't take this literally. Sure, you'll hear live music here most nights, but appearances by real jazz acts are few and far between- then again, who really listens to jazz these days anyway? Instead of the freeform music you might expect, the venue showcases up and coming talent in genres popular with the younger folks—punk and alt-rock, reggae, and hip-hop. To add to the discrepancy, interior walls are covered with photos of jazz musicians, as if they actually played here. It's safe to conclude the “jazz” thing is more of an aesthetic theme than anything else—of course, it probably wouldn't be the popular destination for young music lovers that it is if it really were a jazz club. |
O'Shucks
22 E 100 S Salt Lake City, UT; Tel. 801.596.8600
O'Shucks is an odd mix of pub, sushi bar, and music venue—but hey, who doesn't like all three? Nestled in the heart of downtown, this Salt Lake City bar attracts everyone from casual bar-goers to white-collar couples looking for a little romance to go along with their dim-sum. Usually quiet on weeknights, weekends see a younger (and louder) crowd cheering on their favorite local band. Musical performances range from punk-rock to reggae, and everything in between, so it's a good idea to look up who's who before making the trip. Overall, a great place to gather with friends and listen to some live music—or munch on some of the freshest sushi in town. |
